What is Magnesium Chloride?
Chemical formula MgCl2. The most common one is magnesium chloride hexahydrate, also known as bischofite, its chemical formula is MgCl2·6H2O, and the formula weight is 203.30. The crystals are colorless and deliquescent monoclinic crystals with a bitter and salty taste. The density is 1.569g/cm3, the melting point is 118°C (decomposition), and it is easily soluble in water and ethanol. Above 170°C, basic magnesium chloride and hydrogen chloride are formed. Decomposes at 600°C to generate magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride.
Anhydrous magnesium chloride is a white shiny hexagonal crystal, which is easily deliquescent. Odorless. There is a bitter taste. The relative molecular mass is 95.22. Density 2.32g/cm3, melting point 714°C, boiling point 1412°C, slightly soluble in acetone, soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, and pyridine. It deliquesces and emits smoke in humid air, and sublimates when it is white hot in a stream of hydrogen. It is easily dissolved in water and emits heat violently.
