What is Biotin?

D-Biotin, also known as vitamin H, is a water-soluble sulfur-containing vitamin necessary for animal growth. Biotin is mainly used as a cofactor for a variety of carboxylase enzymes in the body and participates in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. With the improvement of genetic potential and the expansion of breeding scale, the lack of biotin in the animal body will affect its health and production performance.

Biotin in animals is mainly derived from natural feed and feed additives, and a small amount is synthesized by digestive tract microorganisms. There are big differences in the biotin content in natural feeds. Among them, fish meal, rapeseed meal, rice bran cake and brewer’s yeast have relatively high biotin content; while corn and wheat have very low biotin content (as shown in Table 1). In animal feeds, the availability of biotin is generally high; in plant feeds, the availability of biotin in corn is as high as 100%, and the availability of biotin in barley and oats is only 20% to 30%. The availability of biotin is almost zero.

The amount of biotin used in feed is very small, and its commercial feed preparations are generally premixes containing 1% or 2% of D-biotin. Its products come in two forms, namely carrier-adsorbed biotin and spray-dried biotin preparations that are mixed with a certain carrier and then spray-dried. The spray-dried type has a smaller particle size than the former, and its water solubility and hygroscopicity are different depending on the carrier.
