What is Alpha-Galactosidase?

Alpha-galactosidase (α-GAL, also known as α-GAL A; E.C. is a glycoside hydrolase enzyme that hydrolyses the terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. Glycosidase is an important class of enzyme catalyzing many catabolic processes, including cleaving glycoproteins and glycolipids, and polysaccharides. Specifically, α-GAL catalyzes the removal of the terminal α-galactose from oligosaccharides.

The enzyme is encoded by the GLA gene. Two recombinant forms of human alpha-galactosidase are called agalsidase alpha (INN) and agalsidase beta (INN). A mold-derived form is the primary ingredient in gas relief supplements.

Alpha-galactosidase can specifically catalyze the hydrolysis of the α-1,6 glycosidic bond at the end of the sugar chain in polysaccharides, glycolipids, and glycoproteins, and catalyze the decomposition of α-galactosides to obtain oligosaccharides and fructose. Monosaccharide, and can catalyze the removal of ct-linked terminal non-reducing D-galactose in different substrates. According to the optimal pH of alpha-galactosidase enzyme, it can be divided into acid alpha-galactosidase enzyme and alkaline α-galactosidase. The α-galactosidase of most eukaryotic microorganisms is acidic, and the α-galactosidase in some plants and bacteria belongs to the alkaline α-galactosidase. Almost all the alkaline α-half Lactosidase can effectively degrade stachyose, raffinose and so on.

The gastrointestinal tract of monogastric animals lacks α-galactosidase, and higher concentrations of such free alpha-galactosidase water-soluble oligosaccharides will cause the viscosity of the animal’s gastrointestinal chyme to increase, which is important for nutrition. Adversely affect the absorption and digestion of substances. Adding alpha-galactosidase enzyme to feed can effectively control intestinal microbial fermentation, reduce harmful substances such as amines and cresols in the intestine, and at the same time increase the activity of endogenous proteases, promote the production of polypeptides, and control Diarrhea and flatulence caused by feed indigestion increase the feed intake of animals and increase the metabolic energy of feed. Alpha-galactosidase can also degrade polysaccharides to produce oligosaccharides and their derivatives. These substances can prevent pathogenic bacteria from accumulating in the intestines, reduce pathogenic bacteria’s toxicity to the body, participate in the body’s immune regulation, enhance immunity, and promote Animal growth.
